Delayed umbilical cord clamping and its impact on blood collection

Literature on the practice of delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been inconsistent about its benefits and effect on cord blood collection. In this presentation, ViaCord's Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs, Kate Girard, RN, MSN, provides a comprehensive overview on the timing of cord clamping and the collection of umbilical cord blood for banking.

Additionally, she reviews the data driving the increase in DCC and discuss how its practice affects cord blood collection. This presentation provides accessible information on the subject to professionals who are in the position to inform policy and procedures surrounding the education and practice of DCC.

With more than 17 years experience in stem cell banking and research, Ms. Girard has a clinical background in obstetrics as a labor and delivery nurse, and a master's degree in women's health nursing.She has presented at industry conferences on subjects related to stem cells banking and use for regenerative medicine and has authored peer-reviewed articles related to cord blood and cord tissue stem cells.

At ViaCord, she is involved in the release of stem cell units for research or clinical indications, which includes ViaCord’s directed donor banking program The Sibling Connection. She is also responsible for exploring the utility of cord blood and tissue stem cells through R&D collaborations.
